Comfort-type Hawley Retainer (Half Arch)

A retainer used after orthodontic treatment to maintain alignment and occlusion and prevent relapse. Hawley-type structure: palatal or lingual acrylic base with labial bow and clasps; the half-arch type covers a single arch. The rigid base and wire hold the dentition at the finished position against relapse from periodontal fibres and muscle forces. Indicated after fixed appliance treatment, after early interceptive treatment and for relapse prevention. Wearing protocol: full-time for 6-12 months after treatment, then night-time only with gradual reduction; retention usually at least 2 years with review every 6 months.
