A retainer used after orthodontic treatment to maintain tooth alignment and occlusion and prevent relapse. Hawley-type structure: palatal or lingual acrylic base with labial bow and clasps; the full-arch type covers both arches. The rigid base and wire hold the dentition at the finished position against relapse from periodontal fibres and muscle forces, while allowing physiological occlusal settling. Indicated after fixed appliance treatment, after early interceptive treatment and for relapse prevention. Wearing protocol: full-time wear for 6-12 months after treatment (except when eating), then night-time only with gradual reduction; retention usually at least 2 years with review every 6 months.
